Glynneath Black Powder Works
Client: Brecon Beacons National Park Authority
Location: Pontneddfechan, Brecon Beacons
Status: Completed 2013
FPL were commissioned in 2013 to carry out a detailed survey and investigation of the Glynneath Black Powder Works. The site consists of 24 separate SAM listed structures along a two kilometre stretch of the Afon Mallte valley.
FPL produced a Conservation Action Plan (CAP), which has informed the client of the work required to protect the structures. The CAP consisted of a full survey record sheet of each individual structure, which included an AABC Accredited Architect Report, actions required, a photographic record, a 3D CAD model with a CGI film illustrating the remaining structures and their location, and technical drawings of each.
The CAP provided a professional overview on the site, its structures and features which has provided the framework for future decision-making and investment choices. The CAP allowed a broad order of costs to be established for the works; which were scheduled against each of the heritage assets.
FPL are currently working with the client to write an HLF grant bid in a project aimed at conserving the site and reinterpreting it to allow an increased number of users to visit appreciate the valley and its wealth of heritage.
