St Michael’s in the Hamlet Bicentennial Presentation – Securing the Past, Present and Future

As part of the celebrations for St Michael in the Hamlet Bicentennial, church architects Finlason Partnership Ltd, were invited by the Friends of the Church to present the fascinating story of this unique building. The presentation enabled those in the church and community to get an insight into some of the repair work that has been undertaken on the nave roof, the tower roof, and to the clerestory, a view otherwise out of reach.

AABC (Architect Accredited in Building Conservation) Alex Finlason took the group of about 100 people in attendance through the history of the church from its important context of the industrial revolution and early use of cast iron, through to its state today addressing the changes that have occurred and why it is now more important than ever to continue saving the church from further disrepair.

FPL architects have been involved with St Michael in the Hamlet, Aigburth, Liverpool, since our appointment in 2004, and were able to share expertise in the unique construction of the patent slate roofing, and the slate and iron cladding, illustrating the story with snippets of what has been achieved and the incredible journey the church is on.

We feel it is important that the church is not only repaired on the outside, and consider the improvements to the internal layout are important in order to provide the congregation and community with a better space. Martyn Wilshaw led us through the proposed vision plan and strategy, which is still in its infancy. Please click here to find the video of the walkthrough.

The presentation can be found below and allows a clearer image of all that’s been happening over the last 11 years at St Michael’s.
