St Paul’s Square, Liverpool development. This ambitious project helped to restore life to a neglected corner of the city. As part of the wider master plan for the area, the St Paul’s contribution included the design of three commercial buildings, 70 residential units, a 350-space car park and a new public square.
Fundamental to the development was a commitment to provide Liverpool with buildings that complement the city’s built heritage and the scheme was designed to respect the local vernacular in order to reference the strong architectural language that underpins so many of the city’s buildings.
The results can be seen in many aspects of the planning and design of the scheme. For example, symmetry plays an important role in the conception of the buildings, which are designed to be seen from every angle. Entrances are set squarely in the centre of the principle façade, and locally sourced red sandstone is used for most of the cladding.
The project was constructed in three phases, the first finishing mid 2006 and the last in 2010. In total, it provides 33,000 sq m of offices, 4,700 sq m of residential space and 1,500 sq m of retail space.
