Oswald Medical Centre is a local community GP surgery providing health care for approximately 4,000 registered patients, located in Chorlton-Cum Hardy, South Manchester.  The surgery operates from within a converted semi detached Victorian house, located in a conservation area and is supported by additional healthcare facilities provided by South Manchester NHS Trust.

Government changes led to the requirement for further consultation facilities and we were commissioned to undertake an extensive study to assess the viability of the project and to prepare the funding application on behalf of the practice based upon detailed design proposals and cost plan data.

In accordance with strict NHS design guidelines, the design proposals focused around an “elevated pod” which extends at the rear of the property accommodating the registrar training facilities, whilst re-organising support facilities around the existing circulation areas.  A key aspect of the design was to ensure the practice would remain open throughout the duration of the project.

During the development of the design we worked closely with the practice and representatives of NHS Estates in order to gain a thorough understanding of the project requirements as well as getting to grips with the physical constraints of the existing site and building. We successfully obtained both planning permission and building regulation approval.
