Built in the 1950’s within the site of a former large stately house on the outskirts of Newcastle-under-Lyme, lies the Old Wood, Betley.  The setting for the main house has its own 17-acre lake which provides a secluded and private house that can be reached by means of a Grade II listed Victorian sandstone bridge.

A few years ago, our client purchased the house and commenced work on re-designing and re-shaping the interiors. FPL were commissioned to create of a leisure facility comprising swimming pool, gym, home cinema and associated areas.

Located in green belt, within the setting of an area of outstanding natural beauty, within the Betley Conservation Area, has brought very difficult constraints upon a development such as this. We designed the building to be set low into the ground with the swimming pool to be located at almost the same level as the lake. The roof forms a large terrace area affording wonderful views over the surrounding woodlands and waterways.
